IVF with Egg Donors

Here’s the info you need on how IVF works with an egg donor.

What is an egg donor?

An egg donor is a person who gives their eggs to someone else in order to help them have a child. It’s an extraordinary gift—and a path to parenthood for many.

What is IVF?

Where do you find an egg donor?

The most common way to find an egg donor is through an agency, who screens, recruits and matches donors. Sometimes, your fertility clinic partners with an agency or has their own in-house program as well.

You can also get donor eggs through a frozen egg bank, which is often quicker and less expensive, or get eggs donated from someone you know.

You are not alone! In 2022, there were more than 20,000 IVF cycles using donor eggs.

What are egg donor criteria? How do you choose an egg donor?

Choosing your egg donor is a big decision! While there’s a screening process for egg donors including age, physical health, genetics and more, what each person or couple looks for varies, from racial background to education to specific interests. The more criteria there is, the harder it may be to find a match. A consultation with an egg donor agency can help you determine the most important criteria for you.

TL;DR
  • Egg donor agencies and clinics screen all donors.
  • Individuals and couples can have their own additional criteria.
  • Your priorities matter—there’s no “right” way to choose.

How much does an egg donor cost? Does insurance cover an egg donor?

Egg donation costs range greatly, based on how you find your donor, how many cycles, and more. But the range can be anywhere from $9,000 to over $30,000, plus legal and medical fees. Most insurance plans do not cover the cost of egg donation.

What is the success rate of IVF with an egg donor?

The success rate (life birth rate) is about 40-55% using fresh or frozen eggs, but will depend on a variety of factors. Please speak with your doctor for more information.

TL;DR
  • It’s a powerful option that deserves more attention—for families of all ages, identities, and backgrounds build a family.

When should I consider an egg donor?

Egg donors help make parenthood possible for same-sex male couples or single men (with a surrogate), same-sex female couples (via reciprocal IVF), and many trans and nonbinary parents. They’re also an option for people facing diminished ovarian reserve, genetic conditions, cancer treatment, or multiple failed IVF cycles.
