Understanding the Egg Donation Process & What to Expect

Guest post by Everie.

Navigating a fertility journey can feel overwhelming, and many intended parents look for clear information about their options. Egg donation is one possible path for people building their families through assisted reproduction. That’s why the goal of everyone at Everie, a proud Sunfish partner, is to help make the egg donation process easier to understand and move through.

As an egg bank that supports open donation and the Mutual Match™ process, we aim to center transparency, choice, and respectful communication. Whether you’re just beginning to explore egg donation or are further along in your family-building journey, the overview below outlines how the egg donation process typically works (and how we support you every step of the way)..

What Is Egg Donation?

Egg donation is when a healthy individual donates their eggs so that someone else (typically someone who is experiencing infertility or is unable to conceive with their own biology) can build a family.Donated eggs may be used fresh during an IVF cycle or frozen and stored in an egg bank for future use. Both options are commonly used in fertility care, depending on medical recommendations, timing, and personal preferences. At Everie, both fresh donor cycles and frozen donor eggs are available options for intended parents.

Step-by-Step: The Egg Donation Journey

1. Donor Screening and Selection
Before eggs ever reach our bank, donors go through a rigorous screening process to ensure safety and eligibility. This includes medical, genetic, psychological, 3 generation family history, and lifestyle screenings, in addition to one-on-one interviews. We look for healthy, compassionate individuals between the ages of 21–29 who are committed to the donation journey.

Prospective recipient parents browse a curated donor database, which features in-depth donor profiles, including photos, videos, and (when mutually agreed) options for open communication. At Everie, you even have the option to connect directly with your donor in a respectful, supported way to make sure it feels like the right match.

2. Matching and Planning
If you select a frozen cohort of donor eggs, the eggs are already retrieved, cryopreserved, and ready for shipment to your clinic. If you choose a fresh cycle, we coordinate a timeline from matching to egg retrieval in collaboration with your clinic and the donor. Every detail, from medical screenings to legal contracts, is managed with care and transparency so you feel confident and secure throughout the process.

3. Retrieval and Fertilization
For fresh cycles, your chosen donor undergoes hormone stimulation under medical supervision to encourage the development of multiple eggs. Once the eggs are mature, they’re retrieved via a minor outpatient procedure and immediately fertilized with sperm (either from a partner or donor).

In the case of frozen donor eggs, Everie ships your selected cohort directly to your clinic’s lab, where the eggs are thawed, fertilized, and cultured to the embryo stage.

4. Embryo Transfer and Pregnancy
After fertilization, the resulting embryos are monitored for development. A fertility specialist will then transfer one or more embryos into the uterus of the intended parent or a gestational surrogate. If implantation is successful, pregnancy proceeds just like any other and care is transferred over to an OBGYN.

Understanding Your Options with Donor Eggs

One of the most important parts of the egg donation process is understanding the options available to you. Every fertility journey is unique, and donor eggs can offer a flexible path for individuals and couples pursuing IVF with the support of an egg bank.

Some intended parents choose frozen donor eggs because the process can move forward quickly. Frozen cohorts are already retrieved, screened, and safely cryopreserved, allowing fertility clinics to begin the IVF process without waiting for a donor cycle to align with treatment timing. For many families, this option offers convenience and predictability while still maintaining high standards of care.

Others prefer a fresh donor egg cycle, which allows the donor’s eggs to be retrieved specifically for the recipient’s IVF treatment. Fresh cycles may provide opportunities for greater coordination between donor and recipient timelines, and they can also create space for a more personalized matching experience.

Another important consideration in the egg donation journey is the level of openness between donors and recipient families. Today, many intended parents value the opportunity for transparency, respectful communication, or future connection. Programs like Everie’s Mutual Match™ help facilitate these preferences in a thoughtful and supported way, ensuring that both donors and recipients feel comfortable and empowered.

Whether you choose to move forward with fresh or frozen donor eggs, the goal is the same: to create a supportive, ethical, and well-guided experience throughout your fertility journey. With the right information and care team, the egg donation process can feel more manageable, transparent, and hopeful.
