Insurance coverage in California
California's SB 729 requires fully insured large group plans (generally employers with more than 100 employees) to cover infertility diagnosis and treatment, including up to three egg retrievals with embryo transfers covered. It applies from the first plan renewal on or after January 1, 2026. Smaller employers can choose to add it, and self-funded plans are exempt.
Ask your HR team when your plan renews and whether it is fully insured.

A cycle before medication runs $12,400 to $21,945, and $18,900 to $34,000 with medication and one transfer.
Does insurance cover IVF in California now?
For many people, yes. Since January 2026, fully insured large group plans must cover IVF, including up to three egg retrievals. Small group and self-funded plans are not required to.
How much do 4 rounds of IVF cost?

Clinic fees haven't changed, but medication costs have. TrumpRx.gov launched in February 2026 with discounted EMD Serono fertility drugs, which the government estimates saves up to $2,200 per IVF cycle on fertility drugs. Separate federal guidance would also let employers offer fertility benefits alongside dental and vision, so it's worth asking HR.
What does the cycle fee include?
Monitoring, the egg retrieval, lab work and one fresh transfer. Medication, genetic testing, frozen transfers and storage after the first year are billed separately.
How much does egg freezing cost in Los Angeles?
Los Angeles clinics don't publish egg freezing prices, so ask for a quote. Sunfish also offers an Egg Freezing Success Program, which includes first-year storage and a free second cycle if the predicted number of eggs is not retrieved².
