Understanding Your Clinic Quote: What Your Cost Estimate Means (Line by Line)
POV: You’re at a group dinner with old friends, and someone takes on the daunting task of grabbing the check, putting their credit card down (everyone loves the reward points, so we get it) and divvying up the bill to see how much everyone owes. It’s up to that person to not only do all the math, but make sure everything that should be included on the bill is there, and there are no duplicates or missing items. And if everyone’s had a few cocktails (or mocktails!), the check might be higher than you originally budgeted for.
Getting a clinic quote for fertility treatment, whether it’s a round of IVF or egg freezing, is kind of similar to receiving that big restaurant bill, likely with a couple of extra zeroes added on. It can be understandably daunting to look at all the line items on the quote and wonder whether or not that’s ‘everything’ you’re going to pay for fertility treatment. Sometimes, certain fertility clinics’ pricing can be fragmented: Medications, testing, labs, and storage might not be paid upfront on that one bill.
So what does the clinic quote actually include—and what’s not on the quote that you might be responsible for? We break it down in the simplest way possible.
Common line items you may see on your quote
You’re likely to see the following categories of expenses on your clinic quote. Here’s what you should expect:
- Initial consultation/testing: Before you start the IVF or egg freezing process, you’ll probably have an initial consultation, plus appointments for bloodwork, ultrasounds, or other evaluations to test your baseline hormonal response and AMH levels.
- Cycle monitoring: During the ovarian stimulation period while you’re taking the fertility medications, expect to have bloodwork and ultrasounds that may end up as separate line items on your bill.
- Retrieval/procedure fee: Your egg retrieval procedure will likely be a big item on your clinic quote.
- Anesthesia: For the egg retrieval, anesthesia for the procedure may or may not be listed separately.
- Embryology/lab services: If you’re doing IVF, lab-related embryology services such as the fertilization and embryo culture might be included in the clinic quote, or could have separate fees.
- Medications: Typically, medications are a significant separate expense; if you buy certain packages, they might include medications, but pharmacy costs may not appear in the clinic quote.
- Genetic testing: Not everyone will need genetic testing or biopsy services for IVF, but in the case that you do, these are likely going to be priced out separately. Sometimes it may be part of a clinic package.
- Embryo or egg freezing/storage: Considering freezing your eggs or embryos for later? Ask whether cryopreservation and the first year of storage are included, plus what ongoing annual storage costs look like.
- Embryo transfer: For IVF, if you’re going to need an embryo transfer down the line, it’s worth asking whether future transfer fees are included in the original package.
- Optional/add-on services: No egg freezing or IVF journey is identical. You may not need embryology services if you’re doing egg freezing for now; the same goes for genetic testing or embryo transfers. Check with the fertility specialist you’ll potentially be working with to make sure each item listed on your clinic quote is medically necessary for your individual fertility plan.
What’s not included in the clinic quote?
Just so there are as few financial surprises as possible and you have a solid idea of your full fertility costs before starting treatment, it’s a good idea to find out what might not be included in that initial clinic quote. Look beyond the total at the bottom of the page, and ask about the following:
- Are fertility stimulating medications included?
- Does the clinic quote include anesthesia and lab fees?
- How much monitoring is covered as part of the packages?
- What happens if my treatment plan changes mid-way through?
- Are egg or embryo storage fees included, and for how long?
- For IVF, are embryo transfers included in the quote?
- If another retrieval cycle is needed for some reason, what would I pay again for a subsequent round?
How to compare two clinic quotes accurately
Choosing the location of your fertility care is a huge decision, and there are many factors involved. In terms of cost when you’re trying to find the right clinic for you, don’t just look at the lowest headline price. That price might not actually be the lowest total cost.
If you’re between two clinics and looking to find the best price, first ask for full clinic quotes. Cross-check the list with the categories above, and then use the checklist of questions to look into any categories that might be left out of those clinic quotes. Compare everything that is included side-by-side, and not just the sticker price of the package the clinic is offering.
